(2) Development of reinforcing technologies to enhance the quality of river embankments and further enhance flood safety control
(3) Earthquake reinforcement technologies for roads and rivers to withstand large-scale earthquakes
(4) Development of technologies to predict occurrence and reduce damage caused by landslides during times of heavy rainfall and earthquakes
(5) Research to enhance use of coastal areas in cold regions
(6) Research on upgrade of road-related disaster prevention levels, with a focus on bedrock slope subsidence
(7) Research to enhance safety and effectiveness of roads in wintry conditions
(9) Research to enhance design measures for effective road infrastructure
(10) Research to upgrade maintenance management techniques for structural materials used in road construction
(11) Research on the durability of civil engineering facilities in cold regions
(15) Research on river directional flow design techniques in cold regions

Examples of using research findings for the benefit of society
Able to contribute to the construction of early flood warning systems and flood disaster reductions in developing countries

II. REALIZING A SOCIETY THAT ENCOURAGES VIBRANT LIFESTYLES

Research and development necessary to effect large-scale reductions in environmental risks, and improve quality of living space

(8) Technologies to reduce environmental risks to the general public
figure
Examples of using research findings for the benefit of society
Enhancing the safety of geological environments by reflecting revisions in the "Manual on Geological Pollution Measures Encountered during Construction Projects" and other measures

III. REALIZING A SOCIETY THAT SUPPORTS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS

Given the current situation in which much of the infrastructure is aging and we are facing severe financial difficulties, necessary research and development is being conducted for the reconstruction of safe and effective infrastructure, and upgrading infrastructure management.

(2) Development of reinforcing technologies to enhance the quality of river embankments and further enhance flood safety control
(3) Earthquake reinforcement technologies for roads and rivers to withstand large-scale earthquakes
(7) Research to enhance safety and effectiveness of roads in wintry conditions
(9) Research to enhance design measures for effective road infrastructure
(10) Research on upgrading maintenance management techniques for structural materials used in road construction
(11) Research on the durability of civil engineering facilities in cold regions
figure
Examples of using research findings for the benefit of society
By reflecting road bridge specifications in relevant manuals, etc., we are working toward enhancing the reliability and levels of flexibility in designs, developing and promoting active use of new technologies. By ensuring quality, we are also able to maintain road bridges effectively.

IV. REALIZING A SOCIETY IN HARMONY WITH THE ENVIRONMENT

Along with research and development necessary to create an energy efficient recycling society with minimal waste of recyclable resources, we are working toward preservation of healthy aquatic cycling systems and ecosystems.

(12) Development of recycling construction technologies for the creation of a recycling society
(13) Development of preservation and restoration technologies for aquatic ecosystems
(14) Development of dam technologies for the preservation of the natural environment
(15) Research on river directional flow design techniques in cold regions
figure
Examples of using research findings for the benefit of society
By including our evaluation technologies on the functions of rapid pools and waterside areas in manuals, we are able to clarify the influence of river projects, etc. on aquatic creatures and ecosystems. We are thus able to conduct preservation measures with optimized effectiveness.

V. PROVIDING INFRASTRUCTURE SUITABLE FOR COLD REGIONS WITH HEAVY SNOWFALL

Research and development of optimal infrastructure for Hokkaido - a cold region with heavy snowfall

(1) Research on preventing and reducing global floods through comprehensive risk management technologies
(5) Research to enhance use of coastal areas in cold regions
(6) Research to enhance road-related disaster prevention levels, with a focus on bedrock slope subsidence
(7) Research to enhance safety and effectiveness of roads in wintry conditions
(8) Technologies to reduce environmental risks to the general public
(11) Research on the durability of civil engineering facilities in cold regions
(15) Research on river directional flow design techniques in cold regions
(16) Development of local biomass cycle utilization systems through joint use of biogas plants
(17) Research on upgrading and preserving water delivery functions for agricultural-use water in cold regions with heavy snowfall
figure
Examples of using research findings for the benefit of society
Contributing to road safety in wintry conditions through the development of a snowstorm visibility meter to effectively prevent impaired visibility

VI. PROVIDING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR HOKKAIDO'S AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES INDUSTRIES

Research and development toward the creation of infrastructure for the stable supply of foodstuffs by effective use of Hokkaido's local agricultural and fisheries resources, with a particular emphasis on harmonizing with the region's rich and abundant natural environment.

(5) Research to enhance use of coastal areas in cold regions
(15) Research on river directional flow design techniques in cold regions
