Recruitment of a Research Specialist at the Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) of Japan

PWRI is recruiting a research specialist (to be recommended as an Associate Professor of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS)) to conduct educational and research activities at the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) of PWRI in Tsukuba, Japan.

 

Position: Research specialist, ICHARM
(The selected applicant will be recommended as an Associate Professor of GRIPS.)
Number of Employment: One.
Responsibilities: The position requires working at ICHARM and providing hydrological education and research supervision to students mainly from developing countries. The position also requires being involved in research in hydrologic statistical analysis under climate change conditions, as well as supporting technological and strategic research in global disaster mitigation.
Qualifications:
(1) The applicant must have a Ph.D. in hydrology or water resources.
(2) The applicant must have the adequate ability and experience to publish refereed papers (in English or other languages) in hydrology or water resources.
(3) The applicant must have adequate expertise in hydrologic statistics and has published academic papers in hydrological statistics or its application.
(4) The applicant must have good English skills to write research papers, provide lectures and communicate in various situations.
(5) It is preferable to have experience in teaching and research supervision at the college level.
Selection: The best applicant will be selected for the position through the application review (stage I) and interviews (stage II), based on multiple factors including expertise, experience (work, teaching, and research supervision), previous research achievement, motivation, and English proficiency.

Deadline: Applications must be received by 17:00, July 31, 2009 (Japan time).
Employment conditions:
     Salary: The salary will be provided within the following range depending on work experience and other considerations (as of May 2009).
Ph.D.: JPY 16,480 - 20,000 per day
     Hours: 8:30 - 17:15 (Lunch 12:00 - 13:00)    *Flexible working hours available.
     Holidays: Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, and New Year holidays (Dec.29 - Jan.3)
     Leave:
(1) Annual paid leave: 10 days per year (3 days for the initial 3 months of the employment; 5 days for the initial 6 months of the employment)
(2) Special paid leave: funerals and other special occasions
(3) Unpaid leave: sickness and other similar cases
     Allowance: overtime work, holiday work, term-end (June, December), commutating
     Insurance: health care, pension, unemployment, work-related injury
     Housing: Housing subsidy is available.

*The contract will be renewed every fiscal year. The employment period may be extended.)
