Research Cooperation Agreement
with the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR)

On February 17, 2003, PWRI concluded an Agreement of Cooperation on water resources and hydrological cycles with the Beijing-based China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research. The agreement constitutes a general agreement that will promote future research exchanges, including the exchange of information and personnel, and the holding of workshops. Researchers from both institutes will work together to explore specific technological development research themes, and conclude specific joint research agreements.

The exchanges between the institutes came about after Mr. Gao Jizhang, President of the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, and PWRI Chief Executive Tadahiko Sakamoto agreed on basic cooperation during a visit by Mr. Gao to Tsukuba, Japan in March 2002. Approximately one year later, the two institutes signed a formal Agreement of Cooperation.

The China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research is a research institute directly affiliated to the Ministry of Water Resources of the national government of China. As its predecessor was founded in 1933, both the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and PWRI share a long and proud history. In 1958, the institute assumed its present organizational structure with the amalgamation of the former Institute of Hydraulic Research, Water Resources Research Institute, Ministry of Water Resources and the Hydropower Research Institute, Ministry of Electric Power Industry. The current China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research houses 16 separate research institutes and centers, including the Department of Water Hazard Research and the Department of Water Resources, as well as several other related agencies and departments. According to Mr. Wang Hao, Director of the Water Resources Research Center, the institute receives 35% of its funding from the national government, 30% from the municipal government, and 15% from international organizations. The institute has extremely good relations with several international organizations, and with the conclusion of the Agreement of Cooperation with the China Institute of Water Resources, the PWRI realizes the necessity of further enhancing its own international cooperative network.
