Objective and Outline of Workshop


The 2nd APHW Conference was held form July 5 to 8, 2004, Suntec City, Singapore. The "Asian Workshop on Flood Risk Mitigation Initiative" was organized by the Public Works Research Institute in collaboration with UNESCO-IHP and the World Water Assessment Programme Secretariat (WWAP) on July 8, 2004, form 09:00 to 13:30 as a part of the preparatory activities of the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management. The workshop aims to promote the continuous regional efforts to strength cooperation and share knowledge and experiences in coping with the increasing vulnerability to flooding in Asian countries. The main objective of the workshop was to discuss the current trends of flood risk disasters and review the effectiveness of the different policies undertaken to mitigate flood damages. The workshop was attended by experts from UNESCO, Mekong River Commission (MRC), China, South Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Japan. The workshop was a great opportunity to identify common understanding for future joint initiatives and research at country and regional level.
