Ura-tsukuba Experimental Basin
This experimental basin was established by PWRI at the north slope of Mt. Tsukuba in 1969 as a part of International Hydrologic Decade (IHD) to research the phenomenon of rainfall and run-off in the natural river basin. It locates at the uppermost of Yamaguchi River which belongs to Tone River System and its drainage area is 3.12 Km2. The original purpose was to explore the features of flood run-off, but now it is used for the research to elucidate the mechanism of rainfall-runoff.
This basin has two discharge-gauging stations with weirs and a rainfall gauging station, which has kept on observing accurate data over 30 years since we started it.

Current meter calibration facility
This facility mainly calibrates the current meter for low flow observation of river. The transport with current meter mounted runs on 200m-channel and creates the current velocity minimum 0.01m/s, maximum 6m/s. Current calibration data have been accumulated for last 20 years and combined with research on river discharge observation accuracy. Current meters owned by river offices in Japan are calibrated and new observation instruments are developed in this facility, which is available for other organizations for a suitable fee.
