Landslide in Shimekake, Yamagata (June 2009)

On 29th May, 2009,with the officially request of Yamagata Prefecture, Landslide Team investigated at Shimekake landslide area in Yamagata prefecture Tsuruoka city. The main purpose of the latest field investigation is to estimate the scale and the cause of the landslide. After the investigation, press conference was done with the Yamagata prefectural government. As for landslide of this area , the movement is estimated to continue in the future. So it is necessary to establish the warning and evacuation system.
About 2m scarp is formed at the top of the slope , and homes destroyed by the landslide.

 

 
An overview of Shimekake area. The scale of the active landslide is supposed length approximately 700m, width approximately 400m and depth approximately 25m.   The crack which occurred inside the residence area near the crown. Relatively new cracks are found behind the house (the slope upper part).
     
 
About 1m scarp is found in the middle of the landslide area. Inside of landslide is divided into several small blocks.  

The condition of a existed drainage well.  The abundant water is  followed into the well from drainage borings. The transformation was not found in the well.

     
 
The river crosses the toe of the landslide. On the opposite side of the river, the direction of movement of the landslide is different. It is supposed that the bock on the opposite is another block.   Press conference after the investigation , Team leader Fujisawa expounded on the result of the investigation.
