The Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) is a national project that the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI), which serves as a control center, created for science, technology, and innovation through cross-ministerial management across disciplines. This program addresses social challenges that are truly relevant to the public, as well as solutions to these challenges that will help revitalize Japan’s economy so it can lead the world. In the 3rd period of SIP, which will start in FY2023, 14 challenges will be addressed. Program directors (PDs) who exert strong leadership on each challenge will play pivotal roles in ensuring industry–academia–government collaboration toward consistently promoting R&D, from basic research to practical applications and commercialization, based on exit strategies.
