My research interest is developing an integrated water resources management of Mahaweli system. Mahaweli river basin is a complex system and it is the largest system in Sri Lanka which is mainly developed as an integrated multi-purpose and rural development program. There are more than twenty-four reservoirs which are located in this river basin and these reservoirs contribute for one third of the rice production of the entire country and one fourth of the total power generation. The functions of the reservoirs are varied according to its location and the purpose. The purpose of the reservoirs are mainly irrigation, hydropower generation, flood management and drinking water. With the increased demand through population increase and imposed risk due to the climate change, the tradeoff between the energy, food and water is increasing in this river basin. Therefore there is a necessity of developing a comprehensive and stochastic approach which can best estimate the benefit optimization of water resources under present and future climate model outputs by introducing natural science, engineering and technology. Best estimation of the optimization should be analyzed by combining different kind of decision support tools such as physical models, socio economic models and climate models as a policy making support system. Such combined approach could improve the output of the existing socio economic approaches by utilizing the output of advanced natural science and enable the policy makers to take dynamic and comprehensive decisions.
