Landslide in Otou-mura, Nara Prefecture (Aug 2004)


 

Entire view of the landslide taken from the air. The landslide occurred at 0:15, 10th August in 2004 in Ui, Otou village, Nara Prefecture. The size was 150 m in length and 120 m in width. The slope collapsed and slid involving R168, depositing a large amount of debris on the river floor running below. The  collapsing moment of this slide was filmed simultaneously by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, and broadcasted internationally afterwards. Officially requested by Nara Prefecture, our team together with Erosion and Sediment Control Division of National Institute of Land and Infrastructure Management carried out field investigation on the 14th for advising the application of countermeasures.
