This story is from 15 years ago, when I was working in Rausu town. Now Shiretoko is a registered World Heritage site, and Rausu town must be busier than in those days. When I was assigned there, I felt that it was a place where there was absolutely nothing. That was how I started living there, but soon I found a great pleasure: Eating.
The seafood in particular was so delicious that every day I looked forward to eating it. In summer, squid caught in the morning was brought right to the breakfast table as sashimi. Such wonderful foodstuffs were available because of the hardworking fishermen.
That was my life in Rausu, but the severity of winter was so astonishing even to me, a Hokkaido native. The heavy snowfall was unlike any that I had ever experienced, and strong wind and snow storms were part of the daily routine. Despite such natural harshness in the winter, food was always as wonderful as in the summer. Fishermen worked even in severe winter.
As often featured in this website, CERI conducts research to improve fishing works in winter. I hope we are able to help the hard working Rausu fishermen who supplied fresh and delicious seafood to me.
(I was in Rausu when the Hokkaido Toho-oki Earthquake occurred. I remember thinking that I was going to die)
