Current Research Projects
Evaluation Methods for Durability of Nonstandard Aggregate
The researchers examine new test methods to evaluate quality of aggregate
to facilitate the use of aggregate that does not satisfy the current specifications.
The research results will be expected to contribute to reduce environmental
impact and save natural resource use for dam concrete construction.
Project Period: 2006-2010
Evaluation for Environmental Safety of Elution Materials from Recycled
Aggrergate
The utilization of concrete taken from demolished concrete structures is highly required to reduce waste materials. The objective of this research project is to establish methods to verify the safety of recycled aggregate before toxic substances elute from the recycled aggregate. The verification methods will contribute to prevent soil pollution due to the usage of the recycled aggregate.
Project Period: 2008-2010
Prevention of Cracking in Concrete Structures
Cracking due to drying shrinkage in concrete structures has been one of
the most controversial issues for a long period. Although the use of shrinkage
reducing agent and expansive admixture is expected to be a countermeasure
to mitigate the risk of cracking, the use of these products could have
adverse effects on durability of concrete structures. The objective of
this research project is to clarify the effect of the use of shrinkage
reducing agent and expansive admixture on concrete structures.
Rroject Period: 2009-2011
Prevention of Alkali-Silica Reaction in Concrete Structures
In this research project, prevention methods for alkali-silica reaction
in concrete structures will be reviewed and developed by the Concrete and
Metallic Materials Research Team, the Advanced Materials Research Team,
and the Geology Research Team. The Concrete and Metallic Materials Research
Team focuses mainly on the effect of controlling the total alkali content
in concrete.
Project Period: 2009-2013
Investigation on Reliability of Enclosed Arc Welded Joints of Reinforcing
Steel
The objective of this research project is to investigate the reliability
of enclosed arc welded joints of reinforcing steel by developing test methods
to detect defects due to poor welding practice.
Project Period: 2009-2011
Quality Control and Inspection for Concrete Structures based on Performance-based
Specifications
It is important to ensure the quality of concrete in order to secure the
long-term durability of concrete structures. Although there is considerable
knowledge concerning to the construction of concrete structures, most specifications
are prescriptive and they are not always suit for new materials and/or
construction methods. In this research project, effective mthods for quality
control and inspection during construction are investigated to evaluate
various construction techniques.
