About Our Team
The Water Quality Research Team conducts research and develops technologies to protect and improve water environments and support sustainable water infrastructure.
We address technical challenges across entire watersheds, including enclosed water bodies such as dam reservoirs and lakes, as well as rivers, coastal areas, and wastewater treatment facilities. Through technical support and the dissemination of research findings, we contribute to addressing practical water quality issues in the field.
To tackle these challenges, we employ a wide range of approaches, including field surveys, chemical analyses, bioassays, genomic analyses, and numerical simulations.

Water Environment Management
We evaluate the impacts of climate-change-driven reductions in river flow and water temperature changes on water quality and ecosystems. We also develop new monitoring, prediction, and control technologies for rivers, lakes, dam reservoirs, and wastewater treatment to build sustainable water quality management approaches.
Reclaimed Water and Nutrient Management
To address increasing drought risk due to climate change and coastal oligotrophication, we study the reuse of treated wastewater and effective utilization of nutrients. We develop new disinfection technologies to address pathogens and disinfection by-products, and monitoring and evaluation technologies for the impacts of nutrient discharge on receiving water bodies.
Health Risk Management in Water Environments
To ensure safe, high-quality water environments, we study the identification and assessment of health risks from pathogens and emerging contaminants. We develop highly accurate pathogen detection methods using next-generation sequencing(NGS), and build methods for predicting infectious disease outbreaks and evaluating the safety of wastewater effluents, as well as assessing the environmental impacts of microplastics.
Water Infrastructure Condition Assessment
For water infrastructure including sewage pipes, wastewater treatment facilities, and dam reservoirs, we develop technologies to assess facility conditions and water treatment processes through microbial analysis using next-generation sequencsing. We also develop operation and management methods to maintain infrastructure perfomance and efficiently achieve water quality targets.
