Discussion with the Indonesian government to advance IFI Platform on Water Resilience and Disasters in Indonesia

ICHARM has been working to enhance water-related disaster resilience by providing technical assistance, conducting research activities, and building capacity in countries around the world, including support for establishing the International Flood Initiative (IFI) Platform on Water Resilience and Disasters. To discuss the implementation of potential activities as part of the IFI Platform on Water Resilience and Disasters in Indonesia, Chief Researcher OKADA Tomoyuki and Research Specialist Badri Shrestha visited core IFI-Platform partner government organizations in Jakarta on February 25-26, 2026. The purpose of the visit was also to discuss potential contributions from ICHARM and the IFI Platform, as well as further enhancement of the Water Resources Data Center (WRDC), which is operated by the Ministry of Public Works of Indonesia.

The ICHARM researchers had meetings with the directorate of Water Resources Engineering Development of the Ministry of Public Works (PU) (Photo 1); the directorate of Strategy Development for Disaster Management of the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) (Photo 2); the directorate of Planning and Evaluation of Watershed Management of the Ministry of Forestry (MoF) (Photo 3); and officials of the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) (Photo 4). They also met with a team of JICA experts working on a comprehensive disaster risk reduction (DRR) policy for BNPB (Photo 5). In these meetings, past activities of the IFI platform in Indonesia were reviewed. ICHARM also shared recent outputs from its research projects, including “Assessment of climate change impact on floods and droughts in Indonesia,” supported by the Asian Development Bank, and “Assessment of flood risk quantitatively under climate and social changes: A case of the Solo River basin.” Future collaborative possibilities were also discussed, including contributions to WRDC and data sharing utilizing the framework of the local platform coordinating all relevant organizations, as well as research on climate- and social-change impact assessment. They also explored on possibility of improving climate change prediction based on Japan’s Database for Policy Decision-Making for Future Climate Change (d4PDF). The partner organizations agreed to continue knowledge exchange with ICHARM and to jointly organize the next Platform meeting in Indonesia. Furthermore, potential joint contributions to the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, the 2027 World Water Forum, and other international events were discussed. By implementing collaborative activities under the IFI platform on Water Resilience and Disasters in Indonesia, contributions are expected in areas such as DRR activities, water-related disaster management, and assessment of climate change impacts on society, including enhancement of data sharing and capacity building among relevant organizations.
