Visit from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology

On April 1, a delegation from the Institute of Earth Sciences (IES) of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), led by General Director Nguyen Xuan Anh, visited ICHARM to explore opportunities for collaboration. IES conducts research on the causes and mechanisms of various natural disasters, including flash floods, landslides, droughts, and heavy rainfall, and develops solutions to reduce their impacts.

After a brief introduction to ICHARM, its researchers provided an overview of their work, including climate-change and flood-hazard simulation tools in Vietnam; flood risk assessment under climate and social changes in Indonesia; research on sediment-related disasters in Japan; and the Platform on Water Resilience and Disasters in the Philippines.

On behalf of IES, Senior Researcher Pham Van TIEN presented recent cases of landslides and sediment disasters in Vietnam, where large mountainous areas are located in the northern and central regions. During the discussion, both sides agreed to continue technical exchanges on shared research topics, with a view to developing joint research projects in the future. Two Vietnamese students from ICHARM’s doctoral and master’s programs also attended the meeting, which helped them broaden their professional networks.
